How To Minimize Dust & Allergies In Your Home

Did you know Sacramento is one of the worst cities in the country for allergies? It’s no surprise since we live in a fertile river valley and most allergies are caused by pollen from trees, grasses and weeds. Recently, we’ve also experienced quite a bit of wind and fires, which only exacerbates the problem. Here are a couple of things you can do at home to not only keep the dust to a minimum, but also help with allergy symptoms.

How To Minimize Dust And Allergies At Home

HVAC Filter.jpeg

1. Close Your Windows

That cool breeze that blows in the morning and evenings in Autumn might be refreshing, but leaving windows open, even small bathroom windows, can bring in a lot of dust and pollen.

2. Set your Air Conditioning to recirculate

If it’s warm enough, use the AC on recirculate mode. If it’s not hot, leave the setting on filter-only mode.

3. Replace HVAC filters

If you close the windows, it traps and recirculates the air inside. So this is only a good preventative tip if you also make sure to have an air filter that will cleanse the air and capture dust particles. It's recommended that you change your air filters at least every three months. Rubio’s can help with this! Just leave a new filter somewhere visible with a note and ask us to replace it for you when we clean.

Speaking of windows, Fall is also a great time to have windows and screens cleaned! Call Rubio’s for a discounted quote.

We look forward to cleaning for you soon!

Get Your Home Ready For Fall

Today is officially Fall Solstice! In our opinion, this is the best season in the Sacramento area. Lower temperatures and falling leaves are a welcomed relief from the hot, dry summer. Fall is also the perfect time to give your home some attention and get ready for winter before “The Holidays” sneak up on us. Here are some things to check off your Fall Cleaning List.

On The Outside

First, make sure you enjoy some time outdoors now that the weather is bearable! But in the next few weeks, look into the following:

  • Clean patio furniture and cover or store them.
  • Inspect caulking around windows and doors and recaulk if necessary.

  • Check that garage door is functioning properly and closes securely.

  • Clean gutters and spouts to prepare for rain.

  • Hire a professional to get your fireplace and chimney ready for those cold winter nights.

On The Inside

As winter approaches, we’ll spend more time indoors. So it’s not surprising this “inside” list is a bit longer. If you do some deep cleaning now, you and your family will be warm and comfortable when the first cold night arrives.

  • Clean window sills, vacuum drapes, blinds and baseboards.  See our blog post about using your vacuum attachments.

  • Vacuum upholstered furniture and cushions, or have professionally cleaned if needed.

  • Wipe down kitchen cupboards and organize cabinets for winter cooking and baking.

  • Dust off the refrigerator condenser coil.

  • Give light fixtures a scrub and let the lights shine bright indoors.

  • Inspect and protect wooden floors.

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

  • Check dryer vent for built-up lint and debris.

  • Rotate mattresses front-to-back and end-to-end to balance wear and tear.

  • Launder all mattress pads, pillows, duvets, blankets, and comforters.

  • Declutter and reorganize your closets, bringing cold weather clothing to the forefront.
See our blog post for a 7-Step Guide.

  • Get your carpets professionally cleaned, if necessary. Carpets are your natural air filter. Get them cleaned and you will notice the difference, especially if you have allergies!

  • Replace the furnace filter if you haven’t done so within the past three months. And purchase some extra filters to have on hand. It’s recommended to change your filters monthly for energy efficiency and air quality. Have a professional inspect your furnace, if necessary.

If it sounds like a lot to do, let us help you! While we may not be able to check off every item on the list for you, we can take care of a good chunk.

Our 4 Favorite Cleaning Products And Why We Love Them

We consider ourselves experts when it comes to cleaning products because we’ve tested so many over the years. So, when someone recently asked us what our favorite products are...the ones we could not do without... the answer was easy. What makes these our favorite cleaning products is knowing we could walk into any home or business with just these 4 things and tackle any cleaning job, big or small.

#1 SimpleHouseware Microfiber Cleaning Cloths

We use these cloths for anything and everything. They are very soft and won’t scuff any surfaces. They are super absorbent, holding up to 8 times their weight in liquid. And they dry very fast. See our blog post about how we use these cloths to make your sink sparkle.

When everything else fails, this pumice scouring stick comes through. We like to think of it as an eraser. Great for hard to remove stains in toilet bowls, sinks, and showers. Also comes in handy for ovens and grills. Plus, it’s surprisingly gentle and safe to use around children and pets.

We love and trust the Dyson for many reasons. First of all, it’s hypo-allergenic. So, you know you are picking up and trapping allergens and bacteria, not just recycling them into the air of your home. Secondly, it works just as well on hardwood floors as on carpet. Third, it’s not just for floors. The attachments help you clean many surfaces from window sills to mirrors. See our blog post about how to use your vacuum attachment tools.

Consider this your all-purpose cleaner. It works on everything from hard water in your shower to glass surfaces and all the way to cleaning the fog from your car headlights. It’s powerful, yet non-toxic because it uses oxygen bleach with no chlorine or harmful chemicals. So again, we feel great about using products that are safe for the environment, your pets and your kids.

We'd love to know if you have a favorite cleaning product, too. If you ever want us to use your favorite product when we clean your home, please let us know and we will make every effort to do so!

The links to the products above are affiliate links, which we receive a small commission for when you make a purchase. This allows us to keep The Clean Blog running, providing you with tips on how to care for your home.

We look forward to cleaning for you soon!
